Besaxung – a made-up word obviously pointing to saxophonist Philipp Gerschlauer's unique tone and unusual use of the instrument. But in this quartet every instrument is equal to the other. Short hits, surprising breaks - this is the recognition feature of this New York, Berlin, Cologne cooperation. But the young quartet is also capable of the lower end of the dynamic range. A lyrical tone emerges which is counterintuitively characterized by its harshness. Microtonality and eerie soundscapes are no places the band avoids. Gerschlauer's alto sax comes in dry and straightforward and relies on short succeeding motivic inventions. But when he does play legato lines, it is his colleagues Felix Roßkopf (piano), Oliver Lutz (bass) and Thomas Sauerborn (drums) who are distinguished by equal punch. The explosive force presented throughout each concert is hard to escape.
"The music of this classic instrumentated Jazzquartet is not less than exciting, powerful, fascinating, harsh and fast. Besaxung draws a big bow between tradition and modernity… the impressive maturity of the compositions and improvisations is astonishing by every listening. "
"Succinct and firm statements, short hits, surprising breaks and a tendency to explode… this results in a convincing band statement which is seldom found in a band of mid twenties."
"Besaxung is not a quartet of talents trying to find and define themselves through jazz history exclusively. It's music on the peak of time."
